TITLE: Gatehouse Staff
LOCATION: Sliding Rock
REPORTS TO: Sliding Rock Operations Manager
JOB TYPE: Seasonal, May through Labor Day
SCHEDULE: Up to 40 hours per week, working weekends and holidays as needed
COMPENSATION: $16/hour, plus end-of-season bonus (when full season is completed) and paid sick leave

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is the first point of contact for guests visiting Sliding Rock, one of North Carolina's most iconic natural attractions in Pisgah National Forest. Gatehouse Staff manage admissions, provide exceptional customer service, maintain clean facilities, and support overall site operations. This role is ideal for those who enjoy working with the public in an outdoor setting, as well as individuals seeking their first job. This seasonal position is essential to the success of Sliding Rock operations.

I. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Greeting guests warmly and collect admission fees, processing cash and card payments accurately

  • Provide information to guests about site rules, facilities, parking, and safety guidelines

  • Manage entry flow during peak times to ensure smooth operations

  • Assist with retail sales and merchandise inventory

  • Clean and maintain restroom facilities throughout shifts

  • Empty parking lot trash cans and maintain a clean, welcoming parking area

  • Monitor parking lot for trash and debris, keeping the area presentable for guests

  • Respond to guest questions and concerns with professionalism and courtesy

  • Provide basic first aid assistance for minor injuries and communicate effectively during emergencies

  • Report maintenance needs, safety concerns, or incidents to supervisors promptly

  • Maintain professional appearance and positive attitude even during peak crowds and challenging situations

  • Work cooperatively with Supervisors, Gatehouse/Water staff, and Operations Manager

  • Step in to support other operational areas as needed during high-volume periods

  • Adhere to all safety rules and regulations as a representative of Naventure

  • Other related duties as assigned

II. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Must possess current CPR and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification by start date (training will be provided during mandatory training dates)

  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and work outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • Must commit to full season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) to be eligible for end-of-season bonus

  • Must attend mandatory training dates:

    • Friday May 8, 6pm-9:30pm (CPR training)

    • Saturday May 9, 8am-5pm (WFA training)

    • Sunday May 10, 8am-5pm (WFA training)

    • Saturday May 16, 9am-5pm (On-site training)

    • Sunday May 17, 9am-5pm (On-site training)

Preferred:

  • Previous cash handling or customer service experience is a plus, but not required

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to remain calm and helpful during high-volume periods

  • Comfortable using technology for payment processing

III. WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Outdoor Work: The role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions in a high-volume natural recreation area for extended periods of time.

  • Physical Demands: The role requires physical stamina and the ability to work on your feet for extended periods. Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces including rock, mud, leaves and wet surfaces, as well as bend, stoop, and lift as needed. Comfort working in and around water is essential.

  • Work Hours/Schedule: Rotating shifts including weekends and holidays. Peak season can mean managing large crowds during hot summer days. Other duties and/or alternate schedules may be assigned depending on operational need.
